On 15th June at St. Saviour’s Church we held our first event for parents about discipleship of our children. The evening was a mixture of presentation and discussion. James Vaughton our Director (a self-declared parent-still-in-training) facilitated and shared some of the findings from our research on shaping church to disciple young people. We had about 20 parents during the evening enjoying a glass of wine, a chance to share with and hear from other parents about the joys and challenges of parenting to disciple our children. Towards the end of the evening the different groups spent time in prayer for their children and each other. Parents told us that they appreciated the time to talk with other parents to realise “we are not alone.” Another parent told us that what was helpful was hearing about… “some ways to be more intentional about sharing faith and hear other people’s positive experiences.” The feedback was positive with one parent telling us she will take away a commitment to pray for her children more often and several folk said they would like to see something similar at their own church or across a group of churches. Bath Youth for Christ will be giving some time to think about how we take this work forward. If you would like to find out more about hosting a similar event please contact us.
